I’ve always admired Solomon and his journey. Let’s admit it, there isn’t anything cooler than going from zero to hero. There isn’t anything better than waking up to only find out that all the greatness that you’ve asked is with in you and has been with you forever. Well that’s essentially what happen to Solomon.
But before we get deep into the details let’s take a look at where most of it began; 1 Kings Chapter 2.
The stage is set on the death bed of a great king. As his son moves closer he beginning to tell his son his dying with and final instructions.
When David was close to death, he told Solomon his son: “I am about to die. Be strong and become a man! (1 Kings 2:1, 2 NET)
I believe that there was an emphasis on Solomon becoming a man. I believe that Solomon was more close to his mother; Bathsheeba than his father; David. Like any King it’s important that a King makes his or her own decisions without bias.
In this next verse David gives Solomon the key to being successful as a King. I believe that we all can apply these instructions since we are deemed as young king and Priest in Christ.
Do the job the Lord your God has assigned you by following his instructions and obeying his rules, commandments, regulations, and laws as written in the law of Moses. Then you will succeed in all you do and seek to accomplish, (1 Kings 2:3 NET)
Notice that there is a large amount of effort placed on “doing good to get good”. This is a little different for those of us today who study the New Testament.
and the Lord will fulfill his promise to me, ‘If your descendants watch their step and live faithfully in my presence with all their heart and being, then,’ he promised, ‘you will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’ (1 Kings 2:4 NET)
It appears that david was very concerned about leaving and lineage of successful royalty and that he and The Lord had made an agreement. This would explain David’s actions with his son whom wished to take over the throne and caused such great issues in the kingdom.
Let’s discuss this a little more.
